Join WorldViz and Dr. Frank Klassner from Villanova University at Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education (SIGSCE) 2025 for a hands-on tutorial: Introducing Students to Python and Virtual Reality Through Vizard on Friday, February 28, 2025 at David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
This tutorial will explore how to use the Vizard IDE from WorldViz to teach CS topics via virtual reality projects in Python. Participants will work with free versions of the Vizard IDE to learn how to motivate concepts ranging from CS-0-1-2 topics such as iteration, data structures, and object orientation, to topics in virtual reality and 3D data visualization. This tutorial assumes no background in virtual reality or game design, but does assume knowledge of Python. Participants must bring their own laptops. Headsets are optional. Three laptops with a headset will be made available for participants to preview sample projects. Participants must bring a Windows laptop, or a Mac with an emulator. Vizard only runs on Windows.
During the two one-hour programming sessions (7:15-8:15 and 8:30-9:30), participants will write code to complete example projects exploring data structures (dictionaries and arrays), iteration, visualization of data in 3D maps, and creating a small interactive world like an archaeology dig with viewer-controlled popup windows. Participants will also brainstorm ideas for encouraging students to explore VR after the CS0/1/2 courses. They will also learn how to install Vizard and use it with a headset.
