Windows Mixed Reality Headsets May Not Work With Latest Windows Update

October 17, 2024

For users utilizing the HP Reverb Omnicept in research, it's crucial to note that the latest Windows update (24h2) discontinues support for Windows Mixed Reality, which may affect headsets such as the Omnicept and HP Reverb’s (as well as any of the WMR family) functionality. Read the full details in the article: Windows 11 Drops WMR Support.

Potential Impact

The discontinuation of support could render these headsets incompatible with new Windows updates, disrupting ongoing research. We recommend postponing updates or considering a dual-boot setup with Windows 10.

Workaround Options:

1. Disable Windows Update Service

  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Scroll down, right-click Windows Update, and select Properties.
  3. Set the Startup type to Disabled.

2. Pause Updates Temporarily

  1. Go to Settings → Update & Security.
  2. Click Pause updates for 7 days. You can extend this in Advanced options.

3. Use Group Policy Editor (Windows Pro/Enterprise/Education only)
