2021 VR Headset Choices for VR Labs

July 12, 2021

Our VR solutions architects recently have been gaining hands-on experience with new VR headsets, as they integrate them in full VR solutions for a number of academic researchers and other professionals.

Read about what we’ve noticed and why we feel certain VR headsets are strongest for specific use cases with eye tracking. We’re also giving you a full list of 2021 VR headsets with all major features.

The Data Collection Wizard - HP Reverb G2 Omnicept Edition

The new HP Reverb G2 Omnicept Edition offers researchers the widest variety of built-in tools for data collection. With eye tracking from Tobii, a heart rate sensor and a facial tracking sensor the Omnicept is positioned to be a leader in the field for VR research hardware at a consumer price level. The HP Reverb G2 Omnicept is also a good headset to consider if you want an easy setup, as the inside out tracking requires no having to set up external cameras. We have seen this headset be useful for when mobility and ease of setup is beneficial. For this reason we provide this headset with our portable VizBox solution for remote deployment.

The Steady Workhorse - Vive Pro Eye

The Vive Pro Eye has been a steady workhorse for VR research over the last couple of years, being the first headset to provide eye tracking at a consumer price level. The SRAnipal calibration software runs on top of a Tobii based eye tracker. You can also add an additional face tracking module. Our customers prefer to use this headset for a cost effective eye tracking solution that provides robust performance.

The Field-of-View Star - StarVR One

The StarVR One provides a very wide field of view at 210 degrees and also comes with embedded eye tracking. For positional tracking the StarVR One uses the lighthouse tracking system and Vive Controllers for hand tracking. This is a good headset to choose when a user wants to benefit from a field of view that more closely matches that of human vision.
